Increase Traffic Through Technorati Favourite

One of the ways to increase traffic to your blog is by getting a higher Page Rank. An increased Page Rank ensures that your blog will appear in the first few pages of search results returned by the search engines. Your Page Rank increases with the number of backlinks to your blog.

If there are more blogs with your blog-link and more blogs favoriting your blog at Technorati then it helps. Dosh Dosh recently introduced this Technorati Favorites Exchange Experiment which is is open to anyone who owns a blog. As long as your blog is not full of spam you’re free to participate.........

Here are the steps you can take to get started :

1. Participate by Exchanging Favorites
This is fastest way to join the exchange program. Favorite my blog by clicking here and then please leave your Technorati username as well as a similar link to your blog in a comment below this post. Click the Post a Comment link at the bottom of this post.

To make things easy, I suggest using a Technorati favorite link or button. You can get the buttons and links easily at this Technorati page. Please leave a link to one blog only.

I will favorite all the links as soon as possible. I won’t be leaving any comments to confirm this because I’ll just be repeating myself constantly over the comment section.

Please periodically check to see who has favorited your blog and do also let me know if I’ve left you out. My email address is : anu.23march1988@gmail.com

2. Make a post on Technorati Favorites and link to this post

If you are interested in holding Technorati exchanges on your blog then these are the steps you need to take:

A. Create a post on your blog announcing that you are exchanging Technorati favorites. Prominently include a link to this post to indicate that there is a similar exchange going on at Dosh Dosh and at BetaBlogger for Dummies.Make a new post on this topic instead of putting the link in a old post that is already deep in your archives.

B. Get a Link Back. Once I’ve noticed the link via backlinks or Technorati, I’ll include a link to your post on Technorati favorites in this post itself so readers here can visit your blog to participate if they want to.

If you don't see your link up after a day or two, please feel free to send me an email. D
o not just copy and paste the above. Write your own exchange rules and suggestions as it helps if there is not so much duplication. This is a win-win two-way arrangement and allows us to share traffic and readers with each other.

have unlimited Email IDs with One Gmail Id

Now here’s something I didn’t know till recently. Your Gmail Id allows you to create unlimited email IDs. Actually, they are all the same Gmail ID.
So if my Gmail ID was (let’s say) alex@gmail.com,
then all of these are valid email IDs and will be sent to alex@gmail.com:

alex+fun@gmail.com,
alex+sad@gmail.com,
alex+anything@gmail.com

Get the idea? Well, combine this with filters in Gmail and you have a decently powerful tool.

Increase Page Rank - Viral Icons

Have you ever heard about viral link network !!
well it's nothing but a blogroll - the method to exchange the links. This is done to increase the blog's "Page rank" That google google assigns.
Rank Is given between 1-10, where 10 is regarded as the best site Thus increasing your visitors.
In many sites I have seen that websters/bloggers uses "Link Bar" either as to give its users the better links OR to increase their back-links. But they can include Max. 10 OR 20 not more as it can give their site the fell-bad look.

But Here is viral idea to increase your Page Rank. i.e Viral link building - a technique to increase backlinks to your site at an exponential rate thus increasing your blog Page Rank. This in turn will increase traffic to your blog

Remember: Back-links are those link which are given on main page. therfore copy the code given in
file to the bottom of the blog. (adding HTML box from the "ADD ANOTHER PAGE" in your layout
settings of the blog)

ADDING VIRAL LINK NETWORK TO YOUR PAGE
1. download/copy photo/pic by searching in google images to ur computer( size: 50 x50 i.e to the size of the mouse arrow - being displayed on your screen)
then.....
2. go to http://pages.google.com/ 3.login here with google account (or if u have ur gmail account type its pass nd username here)
3. upload the pic here- http://pages.google.com/ (see on the left-hand page you will see the
upload buton)

then.....
4. download this file ( http://rapidshare.com/files/80248730/increase-page-rank-viral-icons_1_.txt )
5. open it up
here you'll find code : -

href="htp://www.blogger.com/YOUR%20URL%20HERE"> img alt="YOUR KEYWORDS HERE"
src="htp://img353.imageshack.us/img353/8276/faviconfc8.gif" />

thats being repeated many times : here in one of the code :a. give your blog URL ("http://www.blogger.com/YOUR%20URL%20HERE") replace code and enter
your BLOG URL
b. enter only three(3) word to describe your blog, by replacing it (img alt="YOUR KEYWORDS
HERE")
c. Give the pic url link that you have uploaded to http://pages.google.com/ & replace this
code ("http://img353.imageshack/img353/8276/faviconfc8.gif")
d. save the file !!

REMEMBER : replace only the code between " "

THEN GO TO YOUR BLOG DASHBOARD
template >> page element >> add page element >> HTML PAGE

copy the contents of the file that you saved here!! save the html page !! and u'r done!

The ALT tags (img alt="YOUR KEYWORDS HERE") is inside image links to increase page
relevance. The keywords placed inside image links in ALT tags increase the value of the link
due to the weightage given to these tags by search engine spiders as they give more
preference to it

Rules: No Porn Sites, Only 1 icon per person (i.e. don't hog the ViralIcons!), and please don't tamper with other people's ALT tags, URLs or favicons.

YPOPs - Mail to POP Email Program Gateway

YPOPs! provides reliable, flexible, easy to use and secure access to your Yahoo! Mail account in any email client. If it could also act as an IMAP interface, YPOPs! would be perfect.

Pros
YPOPs! is easy to use and unobtrusive
Supporting custom Yahoo! folders, you can access all your mail with YPOPs!
YPOPs! can use secure connections

Cons
Using YPOPs! prevents you from seeing ads
YPOPs! doesn't work as an IMAP (proxy) server
YPOPs! is not yet compatible with Yahoo! Mail Beta

Description
! YPOPs! lets you access Yahoo! Mail accounts via POP.
! Works as a proxy server between your email client and Yahoo! Mail.
! YPOPs! can fetch mail from the Inbox, Bulk mail folder and custom Yahoo! Mail folders.
! Lets you send mail through Yahoo! Mail, too, and optionally places a copy in the Sent Mail folder.
! With email clients that support it, YPOPs! lets you preview headers before downloading.
! YPOPs! can show the HTML source used during message exchange in IE for troubleshooting.
! YPOPs! supports Windows 9x/ME/NT/2000/3/XP/Vista, Linux and Mac OS X.

Guide Review - YPOPs! 0.9.5 - Free Yahoo! Mail to POP Email Program Gateway
Yahoo! Mail is a powerful web-based email service, but it is still web-based and does not offer all the features, speed and comfort of a desktop email client.
Fortunately, there are smart tools like YPOPs!. YPOPs! lets you access Yahoo! Mail accounts like any POP account with your favorite email program.
You can fetch mail from all your Yahoo! Mail folders, and YPOPs! lets you even send mail, placing a copy in your Yahoo! Mail sent mail folder. With an email client that supports it, YPOPs! allows you to preview the headers of new messages before downloading them completely.
All this functionality is pretty flexible, and often it is enough. If YPOPs! could act as an IMAP interface to Yahoo! Mail, though, that would add even more power and spice.

New Date Filter In Google

1. Do a normal search in Google

2. Put &as_qdr=d after the search string. Just copy and paste it just behind the last digit of the URL you see after you do a search in Google.
Now you get only the sources from the last 24 hours indexed by Google (keep in mind: the date that Google found the info is not always the actual publication date). Put &as_qdr=d2 behind the string to get sources of the last two days

3. Put &as_qdr=d3 behind the string to get sources of the last three days
You get the idea now.

To search for one year back only, put &as_qdr=y behind the string after a search in Google.
Every time you've put &as_qdr=(SOMETHING) behind the search string, a date box will pop up (see illustration).
If you don't like to memorize the command, just go to Advanced Search. You're options will be limited to nine time slots.

Opening .docx files without Office 2007

As you might know - Microsoft Office 2007 introduced a new file format called the Microsoft Open Office XML Format (.docx).
But unfortunately this format is not compatible with older versions of Microsoft Word(like Office 2003 / Word XP) or with alternative operating systems like Linux or Mac OS X. Nor is it compatible with other word processing applications like OpenOffice, Lotus 123, or NeoOffice.
Below are some easy solutions on how you can still open your docx files in other systems and also easily convert it to previous versions of Word.
Install the latest version of Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack and it'll be able to detect the docx file format and help you convert it to .doc file format.

Use the Online Solution found here to convert your docx to be used in other formats too

Speeding Up BroadBand Connection

Here are the simple tricks to increase your broadband connections....applying these tricks significatly increases booadband speed to 30 %

1. Micorsoft reserve 20% of your available bandwidth for their own purposes. This also affects your Broadband peformance. You can get back this 20% as follows:

Click Start-->Run-->write - gpedit.msc
This opens the group policy editor. Then go to:
Local Computer Policy-->Computer Configuration-->Administrative Templates-->Network-->QOS Packet Scheduler-->Limit Reservable Bandwidth
Double click on Limit Reservable bandwidth. It will say "it is not configured"
but the truth is under the 'Explain' tab :"By default, the Packet Scheduler limits the system to 20 percent of the bandwidth of a connection, but you can use thissetting to override the default."

So the trick is to ENABLE reservable bandwidth, then set it to ZERO.This will allow the system to reserve nothing, rather than the default 20%.

2. Secondaly for BSNL users
BSNL provides DNS servers by default. Most of the time they are very slow and sometimes they fail to respond.
So, Open up the network connection profile and edit TCP/IP settings. In the DNS Server address fields, specify the following DNS server addresses: 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220

Disconnect the connection and then connect again. You are done.
This specifies third party DNS servers which are significantly faster than BSNL Dataone’s DNS servers.

3. For FireFox Users
FireFox users can use FlashBlock extension to prevent downloading of Flash content by default, thereby significantly speeding up browsing experience. You can click on the placeholder icon to display the original Flash content any time. This is more of a passive tip in that reduces data usage to improve your overall experience.

4. You can try to increase your broadband Bandwidth tweaking the TCP/IP parameters. The process is simplified by using TCPOptimizer, a free tool. It helped me a lot but your mileage may vary.

Encrypt BitTorrent Traffic - To Speedup

More and more ISP’s are limiting and throttling BitTorrent traffic on their networks. By throttling BitTorrent traffic the speed of BitTorrent downloads decrease, and high speed downloads are out of the question.

The list of ISP’s that limit BitTorrent traffic, or plan to do so is growing every day, and according to the BBC, the ‘bandwidth war’ has begun.

Are you not sure if your traffic is being throttled Check the list of bad ISP’s.

But there is a solution. Encrypting your torrents will prevent throttling ISP’s from shaping your traffic. I will explain how to enable encryption in Azureus, uTorrent, and Bitcomet, the three most popular torrent clients.

What does encryption Do?

The RC4 encryption obfuscates not only the header but the entire stream. This means that it’s very hard for your ISP to detect that the traffic you are generating comes from BitTorrent.
Note that RC4 uses more CPU time than the plain encryption or no encryption. It is however harder to identify for traffic shaping devices

How can I do this?
This is different for all clients; check the setting for your favorite client below.
1. Go to: Tools > Options > Connection > Transport Encryption
2. Check the ‘require encrypted transport’ box.
3. Choose RC4 in the ‘minimum encryption’ dropdown box
note that RC4 uses more CPU time than the plain encryption or no encryption. It is however harder to identify for traffic shaping devices
4. You can choose to tick the ‘Allow non-encrypted outgoing connections if encrypted connection attempt fails’ box. This will ensure compatibility with clients that are not using encryption. However, it makes it easier for your ISP to detect BitTorrent traffic. I recommend that you try to tick this box first. If you are still not getting proper speeds untick it
5. Tick the ‘Allow non-encrypted incoming connections’ box

1. Go to: Options > Preferences > Advanced > Connection
2. Go to: ‘Protocol encryption’ You can choose between ‘auto detect’ and ‘always’. Auto detect will give you more connections but offers less protection against traffic shapers.
I would recommend to try auto detect first, if that doesn’t increase your speeds you need to switch to always
That’s it, your BitTorrent traffic is encrypted now.
1. Go to: Options > Preferences > BitTorrent
2. Go to ‘Protocol encryption’, you can choose between ‘enabled’ and ‘forced’. ‘Enabled’ will give you more connections but offers less protection against traffic shapers.
I would recommend to try ‘enabled’ first, if that doesn’t increase your speeds you need to swich to ‘forced’.
3. Ticking ‘Allow legacy incoming connections’ allows non ecrypted clients to connect to you. This improves compatibility between clients but makes you more vulnerable to traffic shapers.
I would recommend to tick this box, but if that doesn’t increase your speeds, untick it!

That’s it, your BitTorrent traffic is encrypted now.
Good luck and happy torrenting

BitTorrent - working, cracks, speedup

BitTorrent is often referred to as the best filesharing protocol for sharing large files. But why? What makes BitTorrent so unique?

Well, lets take a sneak peek under the hood of your BitTorrent client, and list a couple of features that make BitTorrent as fast, stable, and robust as it is.

How it all Starts
BitTorrent starts with chopping a file into small pieces, the person who starts sharing the file (initial seed) sends those small pieces to available peers in the swarm. The BitTorrent protocol makes sure that the seed sends a unique piece to everyone, so they can immediately exchange these pieces with each other.
Thus, the great advantage is that everyone starts sharing pieces of the file right away.
Fair trading
Once you have a little piece of the file, your BitTorrent client tries to find other people who might be interested in the pieces you have. The BitTorrent protocol works as a tit-for-tat game, you only upload pieces to people who offer something to you. The more you upload to others, the more you receive.
This fair trading principle prevents free-riders from stealing your precious bandwidth.
Once you’re trading pieces with someone, the BitTorrent client keeps a close eye on this peer, as soon as the other side stops sending you data it will stop sending as well (choke). In the meantime, your client keeps searching for other peers It randomly sends data to peers who are interested (optimistic unchoke) to see if that peer is a potential trading partner.
Selecting pieces
So what pieces does your client sent first? Well, BitTorrent works with a “rarest piece first” scheme. Your BitTorrent client generally looks for the rarest piece that’s available among the peers in the swarm. This makes sure that the most common pieces are still available at the end and may prevent people from getting stuck at 99%.
Seeders & New Peers

Seeders don’t stop sending out pieces of course, but the rules change a bit. As a downloader the client determines the best peer by the upload/download ratio. A seeder however is only interested in peers with a high upload speed, so these fast uploaders can send the pieces to other peers, and speed up the overall speed of the swarm (seeds + peers).
New peers (without pieces) are more likely to receive a piece of the file at random. Besides this, new peers are not bound to the rarest piece first restriction. This makes sure that a new peer receives a “piece” as quick as possible, so he can share it with others.

OPTIMIZING BITTORRENT SPEED

1. Hack the max half-open TCP connections

If you’re on XP sp2, your TCP connections are limited to a maximum of 10. This might hurt your downloading speed because it wont let you connect to as much peers as you want. It is supposed to slow down viruses because their spreading strategy is to connect to a high amount of ip numbers, but it could cripple your torrent downloads.
A nice way to fix this is to download this patch.

Note: Some people report that their antivir reports the patch to be a Virus, This is not the case. Check out http://www.lvllord.de/ for more details on this

The patch allows you to set the maximum allowed connections to any number you want. Any number between 50 and 100 is ok (more is NOT always better).

Next you need to configure your torrent client to allow 50-100 max half-open TCP connections
uTorrent: Options > Preferences > Advanced options > net.max_halfopen

Bitcomet: Options > Preferences > Connection > max half-open TCP

Now you’re ready to go…
A third point of interest is that some “windows updates” revert your tweaked tcp connections back to 10. So it’s wise to check this every now and then.
You can check this by going to (in windows xp)
Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer > System… Look for event 4226 (sort by event).

If there are a lot of daily occurences it’s likely that the max amount of half-open tcp connections was set back to 10. Or you’re infected with some nasty spyware…

2. Torrent Client Configuration

In order to apply these tips you need to know your maximum up- and download speed. You can test your bandwidth over here (stop all download activity while testing). Also make sure that you applied the tips provided in our previous posts.

Note that there’s a difference between kb/s (kilobits/second) and kB/s (kilobytes/second).
To be precise, kB/s = kb/s divided by 8.
In this tutorial we use kB/s (like most torrent clients do).
This means that you might need to calculate your max speed in kB/s yourself if the speedtest only gives you the results in kb\s (so divide by 8 then).

Settings 1-4 can be found in the options, settings or preference tab of most torrent clients.

1. Maximum upload speed
Probably the most important setting there is. Your connection is (sort of) like a pipeline, if you use you maximum upload speed there’s not enough space left for the files you are downloading. So you have to cap your upload speed.
Use the following formula to determine your optimal upload speed…
80% of your maximum upload speed
so if your maximum upload speed is 40 kB/s, the optimal upload rate is 32kB/s
But keep seeding!

2. Maximum download speed
Although setting your maximum download speed to unlimited may sound interesting, in reality it will only hurt your connection. If you still want to be able to browse properly, set your maximum download speed to:
95% of your maximum download speed
so if your maximum download speed is 400 kB/s, the optimal download speed is 380kB/s

3. Maximum connected peers per torrent
Yet another setting that you don’t want to max out. I experimented quite a lot with the max connected peers settings and came to the conclusion that both high and low number hurt the download speed of a torrent. The following setting worked best for me.
upload speed * 1.3
so if your maximum upload speed is 40 kB/s, the optimal amount of connected peers per torrent is
40 * 1.3 = 52
I didn’t noticed a difference for fast or slow connections here.

4. Maximum upload slots
1 + (upload speed / 6)
so if your maximum upload speed is 30 kB/s, the optimal number of upload slots is
1 + (30 / 6) = 6

More Tips
Check seeds and peersA simple tip, but very important. Always look for torrents with the best seed/peer ratio. The more seeds (compared to peers) the better (in general). So 50 seeds and 50 peers is better than 500 seeds and 1000 peers. So, be selective.
Change the default port.By default, BitTorrent uses a port 6881-6999. BitTorrent generates a lot traffic (1/3), so isp’s like to limit the connection offered on the these ports. So, you should change these to another range. Good clients allow you to do this, just choose anything you like. If you’re behind a router, make sure you have your ports forwarded (portforward.com) or UPnP enabled.
Disable Windows FirewallIt sucks. Windows Firewall hates P2P and often leads a life of it’s own. So disable it and get yourself a decent (free) firewall, Kerio or Zone Alarm for example.
Turn on EncryptionEncrypting your torrents will prevent throttling ISP’s from limiting your BitTorrent traffic. Check out how to enable encryption in Azureus, uTorrent, and Bitcomet, the three most popular torrent clients.
Optimize your internet connectionThe TCP optimizer is a freeware utility that optimizes your internet connection. I found it very useful and it helped speeding up my connection for regular internet activity and for downloading torrents. Just download it, and move the slidebar to your maximum download rate (note that it’s in kb/s). Don’t try to set it higher because that will hurt your download speeds!

Last but not least… Buy a faster connection…

Happy Torrenting!

Coolest Firefox Tricks

Speed up Firefox

If you have a broadband connection (and most of us do), you can use pipelining to speed up your page loads. This allows Firefox to load multiple things on a page at once, instead of one at a time (by default, it’s optimized for dialup connections).

Here’s how:

! Type “about:config” into the address bar and hit return. Type “network.http” in the filter field, and change the following settings (double-click on them to change them):

! Set “network.http.pipelining” to “true”

! Set “network.http.proxy.pipelining” to “true”

! Set “network.http.pipelining.maxrequests” to a number like 30. This will allow it to make 30 requests at once.

! Also, right-click anywhere and select New-> Integer. Name it “nglayout.initialpaint.delay” and set its value to “0″. This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it receives

Limit RAM usage

If Firefox takes up too much memory on your computer, you can limit the amount of RAM it is allowed to us.

Again, go to about:config, filter “browser.cache” and select “browser.cache.disk.capacity”. It’s set to 50000, but you can lower it, depending on how much memory you have. Try 15000 if you have between 512MB and 1GB ram

Reduce RAM usage further for when Firefox is minimized
This setting will move Firefox to your hard drive when you minimize it, taking up much less memory. And there is no noticeable difference in speed when you restore Firefox, so it’s definitely worth a go.

Again, go to about:config, right-click anywhere and select New-> Boolean. Name it “config.trim_on_minimize” and set it to TRUE. You have to restart Firefox for these settings to take effect.

Move or remove the close tab button
Do you accidentally click on the close button of Firefox’s tabs? You can move them or remove them, again through about:config. Edit the preference for “browser.tabs.closeButtons”. Here are the meanings of each value:

! Display a close button on the active tab only

! (Default) Display close buttons on all tabs

! Don’t display any close buttons

! Display a single close button at the end of the tab bar (Firefox 1.x behavior)

A Basic Guide To The Internet

The Internet is a computer network made up of thousands of networks worldwide. No one knows exactly how many computers are connected to the Internet. It is certain, however, that these number in the millions.

No one is in charge of the Internet. There are organizations which develop technical aspects of this network and set standards for creating applications on it, but no governing body is in control. The Internet backbone, through which Internet traffic flows, is owned by private companies.
All computers on the Internet communicate with one another using the Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol suite, abbreviated to TCP/IP. Computers on the Internet use a client/server architecture. This means that the remote server machine provides files and services to the user's local client machine. Software can be installed on a client computer to take advantage of the latest access technology.

An Internet user has access to a wide variety of services: electronic mail, file transfer, vast information resources, interest group membership, interactive collaboration, multimedia displays, real-time broadcasting, shopping opportunities, breaking news, and much more.
The Internet consists primarily of a variety of access protocols. Many of these protocols feature programs that allow users to search for and retrieve material made available by the protocol.

-------------------------------------------------------------------
COMPONENTS OF THE INTERNET
-------------------------------------------------------------------

WORLD WIDE WEB
The World Wide Web (abbreviated as the Web or WWW) is a system of Internet servers that supports hypertext to access several Internet protocols on a single interface. Almost every protocol type available on the Internet is accessible on the Web. This includes e-mail, FTP, Telnet, and Usenet News. In addition to these, the World Wide Web has its own protocol: HyperText Transfer Protocol, or HTTP. These protocols will be explained later in this document.
The World Wide Web provides a single interface for accessing all these protocols. This creates a convenient and user-friendly environment. It is no longer necessary to be conversant in these protocols within separate, command-level environments. The Web gathers together these protocols into a single system. Because of this feature, and because of the Web's ability to work with multimedia and advanced programming languages, the Web is the fastest-growing component of the Internet.

The operation of the Web relies primarily on hypertext as its means of information retrieval. HyperText is a document containing words that connect to other documents. These words are called links and are selectable by the user. A single hypertext document can contain links to many documents. In the context of the Web, words or graphics may serve as links to other documents, images, video, and sound. Links may or may not follow a logical path, as each connection is programmed by the creator of the source document. Overall, the Web contains a complex virtual web of connections among a vast number of documents, graphics, videos, and sounds.

Producing hypertext for the Web is accomplished by creating documents with a language called HyperText Markup Language, or HTML. With HTML, tags are placed within the text to accomplish document formatting, visual features such as font size, italics and bold, and the creation of hypertext links. Graphics and multimedia may also be incorporated into an HTML document. HTML is an evolving language, with new tags being added as each upgrade of the language is developed and released. The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), led by Web founder Tim Berners-Lee, coordinates the efforts of standardizing HTML. The W3C now calls the language XHTML and considers it to be an application of the XML language standard.
The World Wide Web consists of files, called pages or home pages, containing links to documents and resources throughout the Internet.

The Web provides a vast array of experiences including multimedia presentations, real-time collaboration, interactive pages, radio and television broadcasts, and the automatic "push" of information to a client computer. Programming languages such as Java, JavaScript, Visual Basic, Cold Fusion and XML are extending the capabilities of the Web. A growing amount of information on the Web is served dynamically from content stored in databases. The Web is therefore not a fixed entity, but one that is in a constant state of development and flux.
For more complete information about the World Wide Web, see Understanding The World Wide Web.

E-MAIL
Electronic mail, or e-mail, allows computer users locally and worldwide to exchange messages. Each user of e-mail has a mailbox address to which messages are sent. Messages sent through e-mail can arrive within a matter of seconds.

A powerful aspect of e-mail is the option to send electronic files to a person's e-mail address. Non-ASCII files, known as binary files, may be attached to e-mail messages. These files are referred to as MIME attachments.MIME stands for Multimedia Internet Mail Extension, and was developed to help e-mail software handle a variety of file types. For example, a document created in Microsoft Word can be attached to an e-mail message and retrieved by the recipient with the appropriate e-mail program. Many e-mail programs, including Eudora, Netscape Messenger, and Microsoft Outlook, offer the ability to read files written in HTML, which is itself a MIME type.

TELNET
Telnet is a program that allows you to log into computers on the Internet and use online databases, library catalogs, chat services, and more. There are no graphics in Telnet sessions, just text. To Telnet to a computer, you must know its address. This can consist of words (locis.loc.gov) or numbers (140.147.254.3). Some services require you to connect to a specific port on the remote computer. In this case, type the port number after the Internet address. Example: telnet nri.reston.va.us 185.

Telnet is available on the World Wide Web. Probably the most common Web-based resources available through Telnet have been library catalogs, though most catalogs have since migrated to the Web. A link to a Telnet resource may look like any other link, but it will launch a Telnet session to make the connection. A Telnet program must be installed on your local computer and configured to your Web browser in order to work.
With the increasing popularity of the Web, Telnet has become less frequently used as a means of access to information on the Internet.

FTP
FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol. This is both a program and the method used to transfer files between computers. Anonymous FTP is an option that allows users to transfer files from thousands of host computers on the Internet to their personal computer account. FTP sites contain books, articles, software, games, images, sounds, multimedia, course work, data sets, and more.

If your computer is directly connected to the Internet via an Ethernet cable, you can use one of several PC software programs, such as WS_FTP for Windows, to conduct a file transfer.
FTP transfers can be performed on the World Wide Web without the need for special software. In this case, the Web browser will suffice. Whenever you download software from a Web site to your local machine, you are using FTP. You can also retrieve FTP files via search engines such as FtpFind, located at /http://www.ftpfind.com/. This option is easiest because you do not need to know FTP program commands.

E-MAIL DISCUSSION GROUPS
One of the benefits of the Internet is the opportunity it offers to people worldwide to communicate via e-mail. The Internet is home to a large community of individuals who carry out active discussions organized around topic-oriented forums distributed by e-mail. These are administered by software programs. Probably the most common program is the listserv.
A great variety of topics are covered by listservs, many of them academic in nature. When you subscribe to a listserv, messages from other subscribers are automatically sent to your electronic mailbox. You subscribe to a listserv by sending an e-mail message to a computer program called a listserver. Listservers are located on computer networks throughout the world. This program handles subscription information and distributes messages to and from subscribers. You must have a e-mail account to participate in a listserv discussion group. Visit Tile.net at /http://tile.net/ to see an example of a site that offers a searchablecollection of e-mail discussion groups.

Majordomo and Listproc are two other programs that administer e-mail discussion groups. The commands for subscribing to and managing your list memberships are similar to those of listserv.

USENET NEWS
Usenet News is a global electronic bulletin board system in which millions of computer users exchange information on a vast range of topics. The major difference between Usenet News and e-mail discussion groups is the fact that Usenet messages are stored on central computers, and users must connect to these computers to read or download the messages posted to these groups. This is distinct from e-mail distribution, in which messages arrive in the electronic mailboxes of each list member.

Usenet itself is a set of machines that exchanges messages, or articles, from Usenet discussion forums, called newsgroups. Usenet administrators control their own sites, and decide which (if any) newsgroups to sponsor and which remote newsgroups to allow into the system.
There are thousands of Usenet newsgroups in existence. While many are academic in nature, numerous newsgroups are organized around recreational topics. Much serious computer-related work takes place in Usenet discussions. A small number of e-mail discussion groups also exist as Usenet newsgroups.

The Usenet newsfeed can be read by a variety of newsreader software programs. For example, the Netscape suite comes with a newsreader program called Messenger. Newsreaders are also available as standalone products.

FAQ, RFC, FYI
FAQ stands for Frequently Asked Questions. These are periodic postings to Usenet newsgroups that contain a wealth of information related to the topic of the newsgroup. Many FAQs are quite extensive. FAQs are available by subscribing to individual Usenet newsgroups. A Web-based collection of FAQ resources has been collected by The Internet FAQ Consortium and is available at http://www.faqs.org/.

RFC stands for Request for Comments. These are documents created by and distributed to the Internet community to help define the nuts and bolts of the Internet. They contain both technical specifications and general information.

FYI stands for For Your Information. These notes are a subset of RFCs and contain information of interest to new Internet users.
Links to indexes of all three of these information resources are available on the University

CHAT & INSTANT MESSENGING
Chat programs allow users on the Internet to communicate with each other by typing in real time. They are sometimes included as a feature of a Web site, where users can log into the "chat room" to exchange comments and information about the topics addressed on the site. Chat may take other, more wide-ranging forms. For example, America Online is well known for sponsoring a number of topical chat rooms.

Internet Relay Chat (IRC) is a service through which participants can communicate to each other on hundreds of channels. These channels are usually based on specific topics. While many topics are frivolous, substantive conversations are also taking place. To access IRC, you must use an IRC software program.

A variation of chat is the phenomenon of instant messenging. With instant messenging, a user on the Web can contact another user currently logged in and type a conversation. Most famous is America Online's Instant Messenger. ICQ, MSN and Yahoo are other commonly-used chat programs.
Other types of real-time communication are addressed in the tutorial Understanding the World Wide Web.
